MISSION

The mission of the Wabash County YMCA is to put Christian principles into practice through programs that build healthy spirit, mind, and body for all.

OVERVIEW

Though the community of Wabash, Indiana had a community service organization for many years, the Wabash County YMCA was chartered as a Y in 2001.

With the financial support of the community, including the establishment of an endowment, we broke ground on a new 76,000 square foot facility which opened in 2009. While the building itself is a wonderful addition to Wabash, it is only a building, meant to facilitate an organization with the capacity to ensure everyone in Wabash County, regardless of age, income or background, has the opportunity to learn, grow and thrive.

Today, the Wabash County YMCA provides care and support to approximately one out of every three people in Wabash, or 8,841 people annually.

The Y has consistently and effectively increased the impact felt in our community through:

  • A swim program that provides swimming lessons for every fourth-grader in Wabash
  • Creating and funding youth sports scholarships to each of the six elementary schools and three local nonprofit youth servicing agencies
  • Supplying and distributing healthy meals for low-income families five days a week during the summer
  • Providing a safe haven for those in need
  • Offering free meeting space for non-profits
  • Supporting a healthy lifestyle for many people who successfully passed the Y's smoking cessation classes
  • Over 700 qualified members participating in activities through Silver Sneakers
  • Aiding one in three member families by providing financial assistance
  • Giving Wabash County youth a constructive, enriching Summer Youth Program that includes healthy and nutritious meals in a safe and supervised environment, complete with transportation to and from the Y
  • Easing financial stress by offering financial literacy programs to member and non-member families and individuals
  • Entering into a partnership with the Honeywell Pool, allowing members to utilize this facility at no cost
  • Collaborating with school and community leadership to identify and engage Wabash County kids from strained family situations
  • Growing Y programs to reach nearly 9,000 Wabash County residents thus far
  • Flourishing as a family-oriented organization, with 57% of our total membership being comprised of families
  • The establishment of a corporate wellness program
